Verner Proposes Water Usage Ordinance

I think Mayor Mary must have a water obsession, because anytime the mention of water comes up she jumps to the platform like a stripper pops out of a birthday cake.

My first clue came during Verner’s ineffective touchy feely bazillion water molecule inaugural speech in January – by the way – who talks like that? Seriously, I would RATHER know more about what she is going to do in office and less about how many water molecules we are made from.

Verner had no inkling what she was going to do in January and she still appears oblivious. When she won the election it was as if she was caught by surprise,  it seems she has been playing catch up ever since.  

Jumping to now, Verner has proposed a water ordinance for the citizens (voters) of Spokane. Mary is as clueless on water usage as Barack Obama is on patriotism.

Apparently Mayor Mary feels the water level in Spokane has been low the past few years, and she thinks adopting a law (like we need another law) would help remedy the situation. Um Mary did you PAY attention to the record breaking snow accumulation of this past year or were you too busy forming focus groups?

We all know Mary relies on her advisors like a one legged man does a crutch – oh and by the way – why don’t we from now on just elect the advisors and cut out the middle man?

With that said, Mary, you might fancy the notion searching for advisors who know what they’re talking about, or at least have the ability to build a strong argument for why we need a law managing how we water our lawn. 

Mary - there is NO water shortage. When a reporter confronted the Mayor with that tidbit of information – she responded “This is the best time to conserve because we aren’t in a water crisis.” 

Since we are not experiencing a crisis why not simply educate the public rather than threaten fines ? The Mayor’s office claims they have tried educating the public and their campaign simply hasn’t been effective.  What campaign ?? 

Citizens should be allowed to water their lawn when they wish. The mayor’s puppet boy Chief of Staff Ted Danek says: “numerous local landscaping companies” have reported Spokane residents consistently water too much.” Wait, how do these unnamed companies have more access to the Mayor’s ear than other landscape companies?

How do these companies know Spokane residents water too much – do they review individual water usage reports? Sheesh I’d HOPE the information was based on more than the good ole “stick your finger in the soil” test.

What areas of the city do these companies usually work? Are these companies perhaps confusing some of the yards they service with yards in the City of Spokane Valley when coming to this conclusion.

The point is it would be reckless for the Spokane City Council to approve an ordinance based on what sounds like water cooler statistics (pun intended) without official testimony. This topic is very serious and deserves more than just a few sound bites thrown out to the media like bones to a dog from the Mayor’s boy wonder Chief of Staff.

A better alternative is to launch an outreach campaign to raise awareness. I water every other day for 15 minutes, based on recommendations and my independent research. I didn’t need a law dictate how I water.
