OOPs False Alarm – Duh I get it… He’s a Cop

A bank in Liberty Lake takes their security so serious that they even call 9-1-1 on the police. Last Friday a police officer who was performing a common bank security check was reported to 9-1-1 as a suspicious person by the Assistant Manager.

According to a sheriff’s deparment spokesman, these security checks help familiarize law enforcement with the layout of the bank.

In this case however employees; or I would venture to assume one particular employee became suspicious after the officer began asking about the number of employees, the vault location, and general questions about the bank’s operations.

Who wouldn’t be suspicious of questions like that? Seriously if I had someone in my bank asking me security sensitive questions I would be a little wigged out too.

In this instance however the person asking the questions was in UNIFORM and driving a marked POLICE CAR. The Assistant Manager did as she had been trained to do, this was her shining moment, maybe even a Kudos entry in the bank newsletter, and she leapt to duty.

Distracted by the obvious, the Assistant Manager (now the Assistant to the Assistant Manager) called 9-1-1 and reported a “suspicious person” and even described him as wearing a police uniform and driving a marked police vehicle….

Crash Kills Spokane Woman

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that the Sheriff’s traffic investigators spent several hours Sunday night investigating a motorcycle crash that took the life of a 47-year-old Tami Ellis of Spokane shortly after 6 p.m.

Deputies reported that the woman was following her husband eastbound in the 24800 block of Tucker-Prairie Road when the crash occurred.

Each was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle.  The couple had just exited a curve and entered a short straightaway when her motorcycle left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Ellis was wearing a helmet, but succumbed from unspecified injuries.

Investigators said Sunday night that speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, but that they were uncertain why Ellis’ motorcycle left the roadway.

Investigation into the crash continues.

Coe’s Civil Commitment Hearing Begins Today

Bringing Pot Plants to a Knife Fight

Police responded to a home on East Joseph on Spokane’s North side last night on reports someone had been stabbed. Turns out both residents got into a scuffle.

What’s the first thing you do when you’ve been drinking with your roommate and start arguing? Yep that’s right, break out the knives. Both were admitted to the hospital with non life threatening knife wounds.

The two have something else to worry about now. Seems the police found 20 pot plants in the basement of the home.

Monday Morning Question of the Day

Can the Washington State Cougars be any worse?

No New Information in Cross Case

No new information regarding the murder of 82 year old Kenneth Cross of Spokane Valley has been released. Cross was severely beaten and shot in his home during what investigators assume was a botched burglary attempt on September 20th.

Some things do not add up about the circumstances surrounding the Cross murder. The media has reported Cross was kind of a creature of habit. Cross was supposed to meet his girlfriend later in the day. The last his girlfriend spoke to Cross was around noon.

The best theory is the burglar either knew Cross directly or was referred to Cross by someone who knew Cross’ habits. Burglaries just do not occur on weekends as often as work days especially mid day burglaries on a Saturday unless the person breaking into the home had some direct knowledge of the victim’s habits.

Did Cross have a housekeeper, grounds keeper, handy man or something anything like that?  These type of people would definitely know Cross’ habits.  Investigators are probably exhausting all leads but why is it taking so long to update the public?

This was obviously a sloppy buglary that went down, the case indicates the prolific of a career  criminal who is comfortable with their profession and would not stop short of killing someone if they were discovered or could be identified.  The odds are this person could have recently been released from prison and returned to the occupation they know best. An inexperienced burglar would have probably panicked once they were discovered by Cross.

If you have information about this horrid crime; call 242-TIPS or the Spokane Valley Police Department.

Don’t Tag Me Bro – Living With Graffiti in Spokane

Update: Since this post, Spokane City Council has passed a revised ordinance requiring business and residential property owners to remove graffiti from their property within 10 days of being notified by the police department.

Where is the pride in this city? The graffiti problem is not isolated to downtown Spokane; this scourge extends to all the densely populated areas of Spokane County including the city of Spokane Valley. Graffiti is being allowed to drive down property values, and give visitors to this city the impression we just don’t care.

Property owners feel the city does not identify with with them and they feel alienated. Some property owners even feel the city should remove the graffiti, and the city does not necessarily share that position. As a result, the graffiti remains strewn all over on the walls of their businesses and homes. Property owners need to be held accountable by the city to remove graffiti on their buildings.

Next time you go downtown, look at the Crescent Building that takes up a city block. The Crescent Building is a haven for graffiti, because the owner of the building said he doesn’t care. Meanwhile businesses around this building suffer. If a business owner experiences a loss of sales revenue, the city looses of tax revenue. Even our public right-aways display graffiti longer than it should be there because certain city departments feel they are not required to remove it unless it was a public health and safety issue.

There is a pissing match between the city departments, the citizens and City Hall who all point the bureaucratic finger of responsibility at each other for the removal..The fact of it is that this is all of our responsibility.

Its time come to your senses people. This is America; time to live the American dream, and take the good with the bad. Life does not come with guarantees; it especially does not come with the assurance that you will never be victim of a property crime.

What happens if someone broke your window? You’d probably get that window fixed right? Why can’t property owners fix this? Business owners, regular working humps and even the lazy city of Spokane workers who receive 5% raises need to pull their weight around this community.

Do yourself and the rest of the community a favor, remove the graffiti, and if you want to whine about the lack of city support then volunteer to help develop a city program to educate the public on ways to prevent graffiti.

Under the current graffiti ordinance, the only type of graffiti considered a risk to public health and safety is “gang” graffiti. The city will remove gang graffiti but you are on the hook for the rest of it.

Spokane needs adopt a mandatory removal ordinance that all graffiti be removed within a certain time frame and if it isn’t removed, they should be fined concurrent to the public nuisance ordinance, or receive a bill from the city for the removal.

The current ordinance left a loop hole that all other forms of graffiti can remain festering on the walls. Other types of graffiti isn’t apparently a matter of health or public safety as the case with gang graffiti, and as a result there is no mandate for home owners and business owners to remove it.

Currently the city is “supposed” to remove graffiti from the walls, streets, and dumpsters if the graffiti is classified as gang graffiti. The remaining brightly colored bubble writing you see on the walls and train trestles is generally not considered “gang graffiti” so it’s just going to sit there and invite more vandals because there is no requirement to remove it.

Here are some steps you can take to help prevent falling victim to graffiti.

• Keep up the neighborhood

• Keep up the appearance of your home

• Remove graffiti promptly

• Set up a block watch

• Set up security

• Paint a wall mural

• Search for community outreach groups – you’re not alone

• Don’t be afraid to get involved

Spokane Valley Stand Off Ends in Arrest

The Spokane County SWAT team took one person into custody early this morning ending an overnight standoff around the 12th and Bowdish area in Spokane Valley.

Police arrested 33 year old career criminal Sean Driver after he gave up once he experienced the slight discomfort of a pepper powder agent the SWAT team deployed into the home where he was holed up. Driver has a long criminal history involving at least 13 convictions.

Police originally tried to arrest Driver for three outstanding warrants last night, but rather than be a man and take responsibility he ran and hid. When police pursued Driver into the house, Driver said he had a high powered weapon. Police backed out of the house and the stand off ensued.

No one was injured during the standoff and arrest, and Driver was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the three local warrants.  Two dogs inside the home at the onset of the incident were sent to SCRAPS until they could be retrieved by the father sometime Thursday.

After the arrest, members of the Eastern Washington Fugitive Task Force and sheriff’s Property Crimes Task Force took control of the home.  They executed a search warrant for any evidence Driver may have left or secreted inside the basement.

They did recover a realistic-looking bb rifle and an airsoft pistol in the shape of an assault rifle.  Also found in the room was a roll of duct tape, as was the magazine for a real firearm.

The search of the home was still underway at 6:15 a.m.  Bowdish Road was reopened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic about 6:30.

Whatever happened to the notion of holding career criminals accountable?
